Mahood impressive in East

Earns nomination

Qualifying eighth in a
field of 45 Formula
Fords, North Van-
couver’s Andy Mahood
pat on an impressive
display of driving in
one of the support
races for the Canadian
Grand Prix at Mon-
treal’s Ile Notre Dame
Raceway.

Competing against the
best dnvers in Canada, he
fought one car after another
moving up to seventh on the
first lap Sixth two laps later
fifth on the next lap and then
tato fourth with three laps
remaining

On the final lap Mahood
started challenging for third
He closed the gap coming off

the last turn bul was unable
to gel by at the chequered
flag. and had to settle for a
fourth place finish

Two weeks earlier
Mahood had contested the
Cangdian National
Roadracing Championships
at Mosport outside of
Toronto

His team spent most of the
quahfying sessions totally re
adjusting the suspension of
the Pentax Lola | 440 for
the unusually long sweeping
corners

Despite chassis problems
and a-overy. strong field
Mahood quahfied teath of
the 20 car field and was
running with the  Icading
pack of car when another
car spun in front of him

He took ovasive action

and left the track at about
110) mph, crashing” over
rocks and debns for about a
'W yards before being able
to regain control of the car

He came back on the
track at the tatl-end of the
ficld and immediately pulled
into the pits A bent
suspension arm effectively
chminated him from further
contention

Having already won the
Pacific Northwest Cham
pionship Senes in Formula
Ford, and the pro-Formula
Ford race at the Trans-Am
race at Westwood combined
with his strong showing at
Montreal. Mahood has been
nominated by “Auto Sport
Canada” as one of Canada’s
