Alternate fuels help farmers

IN ADDITION to cleaner air and greater encrgy in-
dependence for motorists, the alternate fuel-enhancers
of ethanol and methanol hold tremendous potential to
create new markets for Canadian farmers and natural
gas producers, Minister of Energy ard Resources
Marcel Masse told Alberta businessmen recently.

In the same arguments advanced by the Western
Canadian Wheat Growers Association, the grain
growers had hoped, as Jead is phased out of Canadian
gasoline, the manufacturing of fuel alcohol for use as
an octane enhancer would supply new income to
farmers, recently hard hit by depressed grain prices.

The only plant producing fuel alcohol from grain
on a large scale in Canada is the Mohawk Oil Co.
Ltd. plant in Minnedosa, Man., and Mohawk is
reportedly the only Canadian gasoline marketer now
selling @ gasoline-alcohol fuel blend.

Other Canadian ethanol plant developers have in-
dicated they are ready to build if a government plan is
forthcoming. As a result of properly planned fuel
programs, millions of bushels of Canadian grain
would be sold for this fuel.

Use of such alternative alcohol-blended fuels would
lead to cleaner air, greater energy independence and
improved markets for the Canadian farmers.
