26 — Sunday, October 31, 1999 — North Shore News All Rally Round for War Effort Auvucust 1914 LOYAL RESPONSE PROM THE NORTH SHORE At a time when the young men of Canada are rallying in every part cf the Dominion to the assistance of the mother eountry in time of national peril, it is most Gcatifying to note that the North Shore is not behind other communi- ties in discharging its full share of duty to the Empire. Since orders were received from Ottawa that volunteers be enlist- ed for service in foreign countries, in Great Britain, in Eastern Canada, and at home, the officers of the Sixth Field Company Canadian Engineeis, which is the only military organiza- tion on the North Shore have been busy receiving appiications for enlist- ment and dealing with the same. Mobilization is not proceeding by regiments but on a volunteer basis. Owing to the financial depression, many mem- bers of the company have left the city and are now scattered throughout the Dominion. Beyond being notified of the volunteer movement, these mem- bers have not received any orders to join the colours, although some of them have responded from a distance to the call for volunteers. Applications for enlistment have been received in such large numbers that notwith- standing the absence of numbers of the regular men of the company and notwithstanding the fail- ure of some applicants to pass the necessary examination, the MARINE DRIVE "WELCH STREET stvength of the company is now over 150, and it is confidently expected that when the returns of this evening’s applications are complete the compa- ny will muster at its fuil Strength, namely 176 men. When the time comes for the volunteer compa2- nies to embark for their journey across the conti- nent or to Europe, the citizens of the North Shore will be able to assure themselves that this community has responded as nobly as others have throughout Canada. to the Empire's ‘ ime ia Mavor E.A.
