I was in the change room of my local rec centre recently and overheard a couple of guys talking about how “Fred” just suf- fered a stroke at the age of 50 and that the last time they visited he wasn’t able to talk or move the left side of his body. Apparently Fred was a highly valued employee at his company and they were cussing how his boss would do his best to make sure he gor ta care of and would get the necessary rehab to help him r much as could be ¢ Ie turns out Fred was 50 pounds overweight, had high blood pressure and because business entertaining was part of his job, he had poor eating habits. Talk about closing the barn door after the horse has bolted! Some companies are keenly progressive in setting up their own physical health facility on site and hiring the service of a professional trainer to help motivate their staff while others offer dis- counts to local health centres in the hupe that individual: take the initiative and get started on improving their fitness. Unfortunately, many iastitutions don’t get past the discussion stage. They believe philosophi- y he concept of help- ing their pcople improve the quality of their lives but arc roadblocked at some point in the structure of the orga- nization because the concept hadn't been budgeted. Obviously all businesses have to live within budgetary constraints otherwise they wouidn’t be around very long, but what amaz the low priority gi health and wellness Sales directors nothing of replacing their $40,000 company cars every two or three years but t and get the boss to invest a tenth of thac in improving the physiology of the indi- vidual behind the wheel a vou'll often get a strange look The problem is thar we are conditioned to think of health, illness, injury and yes, even death, in reac- tronary terms. Someone gets sick in your department or is injured on the job and off they go to WCE or sit at home while covered by some general insurance policy.
