24 — Friday, January 30, 1998 — North Shore News wee CD REVIEWS Led Zeppelin flies again get better and this six-track disc provides the proof. Vancouver’s premier ambas- sadors of rock °n’ roll specialize in high- energy, guitar-based pop. It’s big party fun with a sassy smirk. These punky nerds tour a lot, so they're really quite ight, and we're not talking about the mainlined Jaegermceister, kids. Buddy Holly Convention is produced by Kurt Bloch. Veda Hille — Here is a picture (Songs for E Carr), The Canada Council For The Arts 1998 Hille’s star is on the rise and she’s an originai to watch. These tracks were commissioned by Maseall Dance of Vancouver as a choreogra- phy score. While the dance premiers Tater this year, Hille liked what she heard and the disc is the result. The work is a collaboration of sorts. Hille cut and paste words actually written by Emily Carr and set them to music. The collection offers a picture of the internal land- scape of Carr’s life with snippets gathered from journals, books and letters. Hiile combines jazz and folk influences. Her ideas are fleshed out with passionate delivery vy fellow musi- cians Ford Pier on guitar and organ, Peggy Lee on cello, Martin walton on bass and Barry Mirochnick on drums, guitar and piano innards. The music speaks directly to the heart of anvone who has admired the works of Hille and Carr as individ- ual artists and everyone clse who enjoys our magnificent West Coast forests. Led Zeppelin — BBC Sessions, Atlantic 1997 The Zeppelin reinflates with the official release of tracks recorded for BBC radio broadcast on John Peel’s Top Gear, Chris Grant’s Tasty Pop Sunday and Radio One’s In Concert series between 1969 and 1971. You may choose to vili- fy the band as one prime example of 1970s narcissistic corporate rock excess. You may number yourself among those who worship at the clectric alter of Page and Plant. Set aside any biases for a moment and listen with fresh ears. You'll be rewarded with a double-disc docu- menting a unique band in full flight. Intuitive jams and ; incendiary live moments define this clectric blues time capsule. Highlights include a super trippy 18:36 long version of Dased and Confused. It’s just the over-the-top kind of stuff that brought on the back- lash by vociferous two- minute punk specialists in the mid-1970s.
