Laidlaw is holding its Christmas Spirit Food Drive the week of Nov. 18 through 22. The waste management company is asking residents to leave donations of non-perish- able food items at curbside before 7:30 a.m. on their nor- mi garbage collection day. Sawmill tour for seniors THE West Vancouver Seniors’ Centre has - organized a tour of a working sawmill. A visit to the Canadian White Pine Mill on the Fraser River is planned for Tuesday, Nov. 19. The bus leaves the seniors’ centre at 9 a.m. According to Shelley Brown, program coordinator for the seniors’ centre, the -mill has been in production since 1923. In its early days, it was a typical large West Coast sawmill producing Douglas Fir members. In later years, other tree species including Western white pine, spruce and Western red cedar. Today, despite its name, the plant produces exclusive- ly 100% Western red cedar. Tour members are asked to wear trousers and flat shoes. Be prepared tor a noisy working ¢nvironment, lots of walking and stair climbing. There will be an opportunity to put_your feet up and relax afterwards, when the group heads to a nearby pub or restaurant tor lunch. The cost is $10, nor including lunch. This is the first year the company has brought its cam- paign to the North Shore, said Laidlaw spokesman and Horseshoe Bay resident Grant Wright. The program began in 1993 in Surrey and has expanded this year to include Langley, = Pitt Meadows, Richmond, Coquitlam and West Vancouver. All food items collected from homes in West Vancouver will be donated to the Harvest Project. which is located at 166 W. Esplanade in North Vancouver. Harvest’ Project founder David Foster said that items collected through the drive will be used ta stack Christmas hampers distrib uted by the Christmas Bureau to North Shore families. Oiher items will be used for the LOth annual North Shore Community Christmas Din- ner at Lonsdale rec centre. Still more items are needed to keep the Harvest’s food stacks at pre-Christmas levels. “After Christmas, the need continues,” said Foster. Food items most in demand include: pasta, pasta sauces, rice; canned tuna, salmon, vegetables, fruit and milk; powdered milk; peanut butter; crackers; healthy kids’ snacks; hot and cold cereal; tea and baby formula, Personal-care items like tooth- Paste, soap and toilet paper are also needed.
