8 - Wednesday. April 19, 1995 — North Shore News miailbax y Facts, figures in column can be very mis Dear Editor: ‘In a recent North Shore News, Anne Nanos asks ‘‘Why is it that so few of us can see what is happen- ing” in regards to the problems with our immigration system. To respond, J would like to sug- gest that it may be because not everyone sees things exactly the way that you see them. Before any- one gets all up ina fit, 1 am not say- ing that there are no problems with our inimigration system, I freely admit that there are prob- tems with it, but I refuse to believe that the immigration system is either the biggest problem in Canada, the only system. with any faults, or the cause of every problem in the free world. Please note that 1 am not some ‘wacko special-interest group mem- ber who is out to see that‘ get everything the way I want it (for or against ‘immigration. and multicul- turalism). Al! that 1 wish to say is that people should be wary of what the media say. Doug Collins, for example, is an excellent. writer. Those who agree with what he says applaud him for his honesty and insight, while oth- ers call him a racist. 1 applaud him: for. knowing his audience. Mr, Collins, who would ‘have made an excellent politician * fatthough I suppose that he has far sleading too much integrity), knows exactly how to structure his words to get people to love him or hate him. His style of discourse includes many facts and figures, as well as his own opinions, and appeals to what is known as the silent majori- ty. It is important to notice, howev- er, that facts and figures, while use- ‘ful, can be very misleading. Two people can take. the same numbers and come up with two completely different conclusions. The sad part of human nature is that the one who yells loudest is often the one who people believe. Mr. Collins definitely has a loud voice, but he always hits on the trath. The accuracy of his. interpreta- tion of that truth is up to the reader, and I can only hope that his readers (those who Jove him and those who hate him) fully consider all sides of each issue before supporting or attacking him. Please, think for yourself. - Question everything: If you stil agree with what Mr. Collins says, I am happy that you have found someone who shares your ideas. Just remember that it is nearly impossible to be right all of, the time, and that each of us faces the possibility of being wrong.
