two electoral areas now completely
prohibit the burning of garden
waste, trash or other materials in
residential backyards.

And a new code of practice
introduced by the Ministry of
Environment earlier this year
makes it harder to burn yard waste
and land-clearing debris without
proper permits and controls.

Concern continues to increase
about the health impact of inhalable
particulates within smoke.

While some burning cannot be
avoided, such as in agricultural
areas, steps still must be taken to
ensure good combustion and mini-
mal smoke emissions.

up photo
contest

IN AN attempt to spruce up
the North Vancouver City’s
Annual Report, council voted
unanimously to hold a photo
contest among city residents.

The top photo will be used on
. the cover of the report and will
carry a $200 prize. Five runner-up
photos wil! also be used in the
report and will include a $50 prize.
While Coun. Dean expressed
concem over how the entries would
be processed, the decision to go
ahead with the contest reflects the
City’s attempt to expand the scope
of the document. The inclusion of
the photo contest and the general
expansion of the report’s perspec-
tive will increase the cost of the
production of the report from
$4,000 in 1993 to $4,700 this year.
Winners’ photos will become
property of the City of North
Vancouver. All other submissions
can be retrieved after the contest
closes.
