THE “BIG House,” as it
was called, was an impor-
/tant home in the first com-
/ munity on . Burrard Inlet
/ known as Moodyville.

Moodyville -was a. bustling
milltown community established in
the 1860s near the present day site
of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool,
in North Vancouver. -

This home was’ built by Hugh
Nelson, Sewell Prescott Moody’s

’ business partner and financial
backer in the: mill ‘*Moody,
Nelson & Co.,’' on Burrard Inlet’s
north shore, ;

Together they succeeded in

building a worldwide netwerk of
lumber markets. ‘

Nelson ‘went on to become a
member of Parliament, a senator
(the ferry Senator was named

after him) and finally the Licute-

after him). .
The Big House became the mill

Manager’s home, and this illustra-

tion was done from a photograph
taken about 1887 when Benjamin
Springer held this post’ and lived
inthe house. -

His wife had a tennis court in-
stalled.

The house featured six rooms, a
fireplace imported from Ireland
and one of the first pianos in the
area,

The exact location of this home
is not certain, although it is

middle of what is now the 500-
block East Ist Street, and it was
demolished around 1918. Unfor-
tunately, like Moodyville itself, all
evidence of its existence has now
disappeared.

- Through costumed figures, his-

toric maps and photographs as

well as objects from that time, the
fascinating story of Moodyvilie’s
past is uncovered in an interesting
and educational exhibit entitled
“‘Moodyville — Milltown and
Mystery.’’ ;

Visit this display from now until
May 16 at the North Vancouver
Museum located in Presentation
House at the corner of 4th Street
and Chesterfield Avenue.

At the same time, take-in the
musecum’s permanent display of
turn-of-the-century household
implements, togging tools, and
other items from the city’s early
days,
