32 - Sunday, October 18, 1992 - North Shore News Scouts Canada seeks support for apple day YOUTH AND adult members of Scouts Canada will be hard at work throughout the Lower Mainland, Howe Sound and the Sunshine Coast selling B.C. apples to the public to raise funds to fi- nance many scouting activities. Saturday, Oct. 24 will mark the first annual Scout Apple Day in the Vancouver-Coast region, and money raised will be shared among all districts for scouting activities. “There wiil be no shortage of apples on the 24th,"’ said Bruce Rutherford, volunteer chair of Scout Apple Day °92. **We have 1,800 cases or about 150,000 fresh, crisp B.C. apples. We hope the public will participate by help- ing themselves to an apple, and making a donation to scouting. That way, we can continue to provide quality programs for hoys, girls and young adults in our community.” Scouting programs are sup- ported in part by membership dues, but mainly through a variety of fundraising activities such as Scout Apple Day. Volunteers or- ganize all scouting activities, camps and events, and are active in both leadership and = ad- ministrative roles. “This is a first for us and we are quite excited about the ideas,”’ said Rutherford. ‘‘Hundreds of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, Rovers and leaders will be out in the Lower Mainland on the 24th. Fresh air and fresh apples — what a great combination.”* The Vancouver-Coas! region, Scouts Canada, covers Powell River and the Sunshine Coast, the Howe Sound area, Bowen Island, North and West Vancouver, Van- couver and Richmond, Scouting, with over 16,000,000 members worldwide, is the largest youth organization of its type in the world.
