Tips for removing paper

WHILE YOU were looking at what was to become your new home, you
might have poked your nose in one room and thought, ‘“‘Oh, my! That

wallpaper has got to go!””

Now that the house is yours,
you want to re-paper that room.
While you are tempted to just
cover the old stuff with fresh
paper more to your liking, don’t.

You must strip off the existing
paper. Otherwise, blistering of the
old paper, may occur right through
the -new. Glue holding the old
paper to the wall in let go, pull-
ing back both the old and new
paper. Even old wallpaper pat-
terns can leech through your new
paper.

How you remove old wallpaper
depends on what kind it is. Viny!
wallpaper, available over the last
few decades, is easy to strip. Us-
ing a knife or your fingernail, peel
back a corner near the bottom

-and puil up slowly, being careful

not to rip.

You may see thin white paper,
or backing paper, underneath. If
the backing paper is left intact it
will make a nice lining paper for
your new paper.

However, if it has come away in

places it all must be removed.-

This is stripped as you would strip

‘. non-vinyl wallpaper. -

Removing non-vinyl, or. regu-
lar, wallpaper, is a tedious job.
The traditional method is to soak
a section with a damp sponge and
then use your scraper. Take care

not to gouge the plaster or you’

will have a patching job to do
later.

Some home experts recommend
a mixture of liquid detergent and
wallpaper paste to help the soak-
ing precess along. This mixture
allows more moisture to .be ab-
sorbed into the paper and helps

prevent water from running down —
. the wall.

wallpaper stripper. Some work
like a clothes iron: you fill the
tank with water, wait 60 seconds,
press the button and hold the unit
to the wallpaper for 10 seconds.
Scrape off the, old paper, then
steam the next area.
- Whichever way you remove
your paper, after the old paper is
gone, the wall must be sized. Siz-
ing means. applying a sealant to
keep the wall itself from absorb-
ing water from the wallpaper
paste.

In fact; a weak diluted mixture

of walpaper paste can be used as .

sizing. You will see that by sizing
the wall before you paper, the
surface will become slippery and
therefore casicr to glide the paper
over the wall, -

PAPERING
PROBLEM AREAS .

To wallpaper an expanse of
Straight wail, be careful to match
up the designs and work to
smooth out any bubbles. ,

‘For internal corners, paper
along the wail. using complete
lengths of paper until you come to
the last width nearest the corner
that is less than a full width of
paper.

Measure from the last full width
of hung paper to the corner and
then add one inch of paper; the
added inch will be turned over to
the next wail. Cut and hang this
more narrow strip.

On the next wall, use the added

inch to overlap and to match the
pattern with your next paper strip
of regular width.

For external corners, again
leave an extra inch and use it to
round the corner, Hang this strip
and smooth the. paper around the
corner with a brush. Mark'a ver-
tical line on the next wall in order
to match the pattern of the next
strip.

To paper a doorway, use com-
plete lengths until you arrive’ at

the door frame. Using . Scissors, - 7

cut out the L-shaped piece. ‘of ~
paper and leave at least two inches’:

cut a one-inch ‘diagonal into the,
