Jamaican children enjoy Easter holiday traditions

time for children, filled with
unique holiday customs.

young Jamaicans enjoy par-
ticipating in during the Easter

descend from the sky to the
ground, as children partake in
dancing around the maypole. This
custom is a spectacular sight to
behold as youngsters grab hold of
the colorful ribbons attached to
the pole and weave them into a

A special tradition at Easter
which children particularly enjoy,
is the ritual of pouring egg whites
into a glass of cold water and fet-
ting it sit until mid-day. The egg
white takes on weird and wonder-
ful shapes that a learned adult
uses to predict the future. Some
of the more common prophecies

take the form of a ship indicating
travel and a cathedral signifying
marriage.

Food is an integral part of the
Easter holidays. Since eating meat
is taboo during this holy period,
only seafood and the traditional
‘bun and cheese’? are acceptable
fare. Fish — steamed, boiled,
grilled or deep fried, is the most

common scufood eaten during the
Lenten season and is a must on
Good Friday. A variation of the
English hot cross bun, ‘‘bun and
cheese’ is a favorite, especialy
among children. This sweet treat
is loaf-shaped and filled with cur-
rants, raisins and other dried
fruit. Cheese is then placed be-
tween two slices.
