Joy Nietcalfe JOY TELLS ALL BIGGEST SCOOP of the week is that one of the worid’s leading political figures is heading our way. Reliable sources tell me that Britain’s Iron Lady, former Brit- ish Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, will be in our area within the next two weeks for a private speaking engagement as a guest of wealthy West Van businessman, Jimmy Pattison. That’s because every year, Jimmy Pattison hosts a working weekend for the hundreds of managers of his many and varied enterprises involved in the Jim Pattison Group. J.P. calls this particular weekend ‘‘Partners in Pride.”’ In the past, he’s brought in such guest speakers as Bob Hope, Walter Mondale, Alexander Haig and former U.S. presidents Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan. This year’s ‘‘Partners in Pride’’ will be held in Birch Bay on the weekend of March 15. If this comes off, Mrs. Thatcher will be J.P.’s first female guest speaker, and probably the only female guest speaker that he would have!... eee The other important scoop this week in the local financial world is that, after almost 26 years of making VanCity Savings Credit Union what it is today, their senior vice-president, Wayne MacKay, is stepping down. After a quarter of a century, the West Var: resident feels that it’s time for a change and wants a chance to try his hand as an in- dependent financial consultant. He'll make his big move from the VanCity Headquarters on ‘April 3 to open his own consulting practice. Already word has leaked out, and he has had offers from other credit unions around the province and even from Alberta. The rest of the scoop is that Wayne is just back from a trip down south to the baseball world of The Dodgers. That’s his favorite team since the early days of The Bums in Brooklyn, when Buke Snyder was his personal hero. Everybody knows of Wayne’s passion, so to celebrate his 25th anniversary with the company last May, VanCity C.E.O. Bob Quart Sunday, March 3, 1991 ~ COCKTAILS & CAVIAR presented Wayne with a dream trip to Dodgertown — to the same training camp thar the Dodger players go through for spring training. An exhausted Wayne has just now returned after one of the most unforgettable weeks of his life! An entire week of meeting, exercising, dining and playing with 14 Hall of Famers and seven cur- rent Dodger coaches! And it was tough! It was freezing at night, he wasn’t as physically well-prepared as he thought he was, and you have never seen a baseball travel- ling so fast and straight at you as they come out of the machine at 75 miles an hour. And he can’t wait to do it all over again! He’s a good guy and we wish him welll... ese The star of one of Toronto’s most popular CTV talk shows, Dini Petty will be in Vancouver in mid-March. She'll be here to tape several shows at Canada Place. The dates are March !7 to 21, with one show a day being taped.
