Now, in my mid-forties, I am experiencing increased weakness and have difficulty walking more than short distances, particularly if I have to carry my shopp- ing. | wonder if [ would be entitled to a disabled parking pass. I have always left those handicapped spots free but [ notice other people, who appear much more able-bodied than I, parking in them. Just how disabled do you have to be to get a disabled parking permit? Answer: To be eligible for a disabled parking pass you must have a severe mobility impairment. This is rather a general description and you should probably discuss it with your doctor. You will need your doc- tor’s signature on the application form for the park- ing permit. You can application form by calling Pet oan SPARC (Social Planning and Research Council of B.C.) at 736-3367. The parking permits can be for temporary disabilities as well as permanent, so someone with a broken leg can get a permit for a short period of time. The fee for a disabled parking permit is $6 at present, but this is under review and may change. In most municipalities it is legal to park in a dis- abled parking spot if you do not have a permit. If you sce a car without a permit using a disabled spot in a private lot such as a mall parking lot, you can call the mall security to have it removed. if you are not already in contact with the Post Polio Awareness and Support Society of B.C. you might find it worthwhile to give them a call. They offer information and support to polio survivors in B.C. They are located in Victoria at 382-8999 and can put you in touch with a contact person in your area.
