Cancer Society needs
West Van volunteers

THE WEST Vancouver Canadian
Cancer Society may have to close
down its office unless it can fill a
number of key vacancies.

Current president Norma Sharpe
is retiring after five years on the
job, while fundraising chairman
Sally Sapinsky is taking her role to
the district level.

A treasurer is required, as well
as volunteers fo. tne Reach to Re-
covery and Cansurmount programs
and volunteer driver organization.

“It’s not that anyone is unhappy
here; these vacancies have all come
open at the same time,’ emphasiz-
ed Sapinsky.

Rather she is very enthusiastic
about working for the cancer
society.

“There is a lot of personal
satisfaction and a warm feeling in
your heart to know that you’re
helping and that you’re needed,”
she explained to the News.

Volunteering with the society is
@ great way to pick up or practise
rusty office skills and gain other
experiences, which can vary from
sweeping the floor to chatting with
a cerporation president.

In many cases, volunteer in-
volvement in the community has
made a difference in a job inter-
view, because Sapinsky believes
that it ‘‘tells an employer some-
thing about you.

“And you can meet so many
different and interesting people,’
she said.

The position of president, ac-
cording to Sapinsky, does not re-
quire a big time commitment, but

involves overviewing the various
cancer programs.

She is hoping to split the job of
fund-raising chairman and fill it
with two people, one to look after
the residential campaign (mostly
between January and May) and the
other to look after other annual
events, such as the upcoming Terry
Fox Run.

A retired person who can come
in during the day would be best for
the role of treasurer, although the
time commitment is not heavy out-
side of the busy March to May
campaigning period.

“We have many other jobs
available and we can find one to
suit tne volunteer,’’ said Sapinsky.

People who have had cancer and
have experienced treatment pro-
cedures are needed to counsel new
cancer patients through the
Cansurmount and Reach to Re-
covery (for mastectomy patients
specifically) programs.

“‘We also need speakers and of-

fice workers,’’ said Sapinsky.

She said it would be a shame if
the office, which is open from 10
a.m. to 2 p.m., had to close for
lack of personnel, because so many
people come in seeking informa-
tion.

“I think West Vancouver has
really felt our presence,” said
Sapinsky.

An orientation meeting for vol-
unteers will be held, Wed., Oct.
25, 7:30 p.m. at St. Stephens
Church, 885 22nd Street in West
Vancouver.
