SFU Clansmen out
to beat Florida heat

THE SFU Soccer Clansmen meet
familiar foe Boca Raton College
Kaighis today at the National
Association of Intercollegiate
Athletics (NAIA) national cham-
pionships in Fort Lauderdale,
Florida.

West Vancouver’s Scott Mun-
son’s winning playoff goal gave
the Clans a !-0 win over Warner
Pacific College sending the Clans
to the NAIA for the third con-
secutive year,

Munson, 18, in his freshman
season, headed home across from
North Vancouver’s Dino Accili for
the winning geal. It was Munson’s
second consecutive game winning
playoff goal and his ninth of the
season, putting him tops of the
Clansmen, despite only securing a
Starting position mid-way through
the season.

The Clansmen have gained con-
fidence despite this being the
poorest season (10-10) since the
Burnaby soccer program began.

But they will have to put up an
extra fight today te beat Boca
Raton, who defeated SFU 1-0 in
overtime to capture the 1987
NAIA national title and is current-
ly riding a 36-game unbeaten
streak,

Earlier this year Boca Raton
played Canada’s World Cup quali-
fying team to a pair of ties, prior
to Canada losing their qualifying
series with Guatemala.

In tournament seedings released
last week, SFU is cated eighth in
the 12-team tournament hosted by
Nova University in Fort Lauder-
dale.

It is the Clan’s 12th trip to the
national tournament, highlighted
by championship wins in
1976, 1982, and 1983.

SFU has won four of its last five
games heading into the champion-
ships.

Munson, a graduate from
Sutherland Secondary, and the
Clansmen, square off with the
Knights at 3 p.m.
