OCTOBER HAS been proclaimed
{International Lupus Awareness
Month and the B.C. Lupus
Association urges people to take
some time this month <o learn
about Lupus.

Lupus is an incurable, inflam-
matory disease that strikes the
body’s connective tissues, causing
the immune system to generate an-
tibodies which attack healthy tissue
instead of fighting off bacteria and
viruses. Over 50,000 Canadians
suffer from Lupus and, although it

can affect anyone at any aye,
Lupus strikes women in their
childbearing years eight to 10 times
as often as men.

Lupus is more common than
multiple sclerosis, muscular
dystrophy, cystic fibrosis and
leukemia, but many people are
unaware of its existence or symp-
toms.

non-profit arts and recycling
organization, collects a variety of
safe, industrial castoffs and makes
them available for creative re-use
through workshops, retail sales
and mail order. Its goals are to in-
crease both creativity and en-
vironmental awareness through the
use of these materials.

And in the gas fields of
northeastern B.C. there will
be stepped-up exploration
and development to prepare
for an increase of 10 to 15
per cent in the province's
gas sales.

grit and dust.
