Squamish Highway improvements slated THE SQUAMISH Highway improvement project is far from forgotten. says Trans- portation and Highways Minister Cliff Michael. By JOHN PIFER From Victoria In fact, the B.C. government ‘intends to continue to pump sev- era} million dollars per year’’ into the stretch from Horseshoe Bay to Whistler, Michael told the News. Once the current sitting of the legislature moved into estimates of his department’s budget, precise figures would be presented for the Squamish Highway work, he add- ed. Current work includes ancillary highway completion, creek chan- nelling, and the approaches to and construction of bridges at 19 Mile Creek and Pemberton, as well as general blacktopping. “There are several continuing projects within the overall pro- ject,’ said Michael, with the long-range plan for a full four-lane modern highway to service that west coast. Pigeons poisoned PIGEONS ARE being poisoned in the Lower Lonsdale area. Rovert Johnsen, a North Van- couver resident, said in the past three days he has found two pigeons who were poisoned, by persons unknown. “Is this going to happen all the time? The poor things were in agony,’ he said. Jeff Lawson, superintendent of North Vancouver’ s SPCA, said pigeon poisoning is an ongoing problem. But he said the SPCA: has not noticed an increase. He said some of the larger com- panies hire pest control agencies, which are licensed by the provin- cial government to deal with pro- blems, such as too many pigeons in an area. “The poison put down (by the pest control agencies) is designed to discourage the pigeons so they won't go back. It’s not meant to kill them,”’ he said.
