WV COMPOSER 51 - Friday, April 12, 1985 - North Shore News Toronto style here PAGE 53 She wrote Vancouver's song MEGAN METCALFE is alive with the sound of her own music. The 21-year-old West Van- couver resident has leapt into local songwriting prominence with, ‘‘Vancouver You’ll Always Look Like Home To Me’,” the winning entry in the Pacific Songwriters Associa- tion (PSA) sponsored search for Vancouver's centennial birthday song. Like the city it sets to music, Metcalfe’s song per- colates with breezy optimism and confidence. It is an unabashed love song to Van- couver that has thus far suc- ceeded in stirring an infec- tious civic pride in local listeners and admiration from non-residents. **People are really getting behind the promotion of the song,’’ says Metcalfe, “initially they asssumed that it would be just a commercial for the city, but after listen- ing to it they realize its poten- tial. The song is really taking on a life of its own.’’ Barry Payne, President of the PSA, says response to Metcalfe’s song has been “really good.”" Recorded April 2 at Van- couver's Ocean Sound in a 14-hour marathon session, it has already had airplay on most local radio stations and cis Fae NEWS photo Terry Peters ’ WEST VANCOUVER ‘songwriter Megan Metcalfe belts out a chorus of “Vancouver You'll Always Look Like Home To Me”’, her winning entry in the Pacific Sengwriters Association sponsored search for Vancouver's centennial song. Program Director, Dave Geddes, says CHQM is play- ing the song once a day to limited reaction thus far, but expects both frequency of re- quest and enthusiasm of reac- tion to increase as 1986 approaches. The four-month song search attracted 245 entrants. Two panels of judges assess- ed songs on their potential for radio airplay, accessibilty to other mediums such as school choirs, and their celebration of Vancouver. Metcalfe’s song was the unanimous winner. The song features the lead vocals of Jane Mortifee, Nancy Nash, and Peter Clarke backed with the finest in local studio musicianship. Metcalfe says she has been seriously committed to songwriting as a career for the past five years and has written approximately 50 songs. Personal career highlights in this most com- petitive of fields include win- ning the 1982 CKVU amateur talent contest and creating the 1983 ‘Cold Turkey: Day’ jingle for the B.C. Because ‘Vancouver You'll Always Look Like Home To Me’ was such a labor of love, Metcalfe says it was the most difficult song she has ever at- tempted: ‘I tried for three weeks and came up with nothing, then wrote it an hour before the contest closed." Metcalfe is hoping her vic- tory and the subsequent en- thusiasm it has generated in her career will be her spr- ingboard to greater success and songwriting opportunity. Exposure from the song, she says, has been overwhelm- ing:‘‘I’ve never shaken so many hands in my life.’’ Though he says artist development in the Van- couver area remains a pro- blem, Payne, believes oppor- tunities are just beginning to " open up. ; In a field as brutally com- petitive as songwriting, Met- calfe is making impressive strides. If she continues at her present pace, she will become one more feather in a Vancouver musical cap that is becoming embarrasingly full. i! and accessories 210 a.m.-6p.m. HAMIETON sp
