of volunteer tutors is highly
important, they need to be
sensitive to children, with a
willingness to make a
commitment.

Each volunteer is inter-
viewed by the volunteer coor-
dinator and then placed to
train in a specific tutorial
program. Training sessions
vary, depending on the type
of tutorial programs
involved.

Students selected for the
Tutoring Program are refer-
red to the volunteer coor-
dinator by District
specialists.

The process often begins
when the class teacher
¢liscusses a child’s learning
problem with the learning
assistance teacher and school
counsellor. At this time the
parents are informed about
the students difficulties. The
child’s concerns are brought
to their attention of the
District psychologist or
District specialist. Informa-
tion regarding the final selec-
tion of a student for tutoring
is passed from this group
discussion to the volunteer
coordinator.

When a student has been
referred to the tutoring pro-
gram, the volunteer coor-
dinator determines possible
tutoring teams and_ places
students on specific programs
according to priority and
need.

District specialists. The learn-
ing assistance teacher in the
school is a daily resource for
tutor’s questions. Monthly
tutor meetings provide tutors
with an opportunity to share
their questions and ideas with
each other.

Pre-testing and _ post-
testing occurs with all
children on the tutoring pro-
gram. In this way, a pupil’s
progress can be assessed and
educational plans can be in-
itiated and revised.

In North Vancouver, a
variety of tutorial programs
have been designed to serve
children with diverse educa-
tional needs.

The Orton-Gillingham
program is a multi-sensory
remedial reading program
designed for elementary
children who have specific
language disabilities. Tutors
attend an 18 hour training
program. They work closely
with the learning assistance
teacher and volunteer coor-
dinator.

The Articulation program
is for elementary pupils who
have articulatory speech pro-
blems. Tutors provide rein-
forcement and’ practice time.
