The case of the disappearing pounds

It was the most difficult
case the venerable Detective

Suretalk Bones had _ ever
encountered.
That very afternoon, a

mysterious woman in a black
veil had arrived at his
comfortable study at 21B
Laker Street to report that
her husband, or a portion of
him, at any rate, was
missing.

“I simply cannot imagine
what has become of him,
Mr. Suretalk,” lamented the

poor woman, weeping
profusely. “A few short
months ago, he was his

lovable, 300-pound self. But
then a mysterious change
seemed to come over him.
“He began to turn down
the Yorkshire pudding and
English trifle I had the cook
prepare for him. He took up
walking briskly with our
Irish setter Delmonico

through the streets of
London.
“Gradually, mounds of

flesh the poor man _ had
carried with him = since
childhood began to diminish
and muscle and bone ap-
peared in their place. Today
he is but a shadow of his
former self. So I’ve come to
you for assistance in filing a
missing person's report for
the rest of him.”

Without delay, Bones set
about to analyze the
situation. Who could have
been responsible for the
-disappearance of the missing
pounds? Could it have been
the man’s employer, I.M.
Scrawny? Jealous and mean-
spirited, he could well have
felt threatened by an em-
ployee of such generous
proportions and may have
done away with those
pounds out of spite. Or could
it have been the cook,
Sickoff Cookin, who, weary

down because your eye-
glasses always slide to the tip
of your nose?
