The Bennett government
has disappointed most
British Columbians by using
a confrontational approach

‘to dealing with native land

claims. Bennett's governm-
ent has failed to understand
the economic importance of
negotiating native claims,

In two recent issues of the
News, Jack Davis has at-
tempted to apologize. for
those failures by writing
about apartheid. Correcting
a historical injustice has
nothing to do with racism.

Most British Columbians
have a sense of fair play that
calls for a negotiated settle-
ment. New Democrats sup-
port that sense of fair play

by calling for the immediate
recognition of aboriginal ti-
tle and for the negotiating
process to begin. The issue is
not whether native people
have a claim, but rather it is
what constitutes a fair set-
tlement for legiiimate
claims.

The final settlement of
native claims is going to in-
volve a lot of hard bargain-
ing, but in the absence of
negotiations every major
economic project in British
Columbia is threatened with
legal action. Negotiations
over land claims are essential
to remove the uncertainty
