Windsurfing is Canada’s latest sports craze and af- ficianados swear there will be more multi-colored sails darting across the country’s waters than pairs of skis in mountainside lockers within the next decade. “It hasn't even started yet,” says Bernard Labrosse, president of the fledgling B.C. Windsurfing Association. “It's still in the fetal stage.” “It’s just beginning to boom now,” agrees his Ontario counterpart John Boothroyd. “There are a lot of different boards coming onto the market - everyone wants to get in now because they know the product will sell.” “Predictions are there will be more people windsurfing than skiing in the next few years.” What's so exciting about mer : { ” standing on a_ 12-foot polyethylene board, hanging on to a_ wishbone-shaped boom on a 14-foot mast and pitting your weight and a three-cornered sail against the wind? “It's sort of like skiing,” says Paul Winterton, the 30- year-old Vancouver en- trepreneur and former jade sculptor who dropped his chisel in 1973 to bring windsurfing to B.C, “It's the feeling of the board and you skimming across the water, it’s the wind, the waves, the speed - it’s just a great sport.” Besides, he adds, wind- surfing is easy to learn - “it’s a family sport that everyone, no matter what age, can do” - and relatively inexpensive. The initial outlay of about $1,200 for a rig and a wet suit may seem steep, but “after that the wind and the water free”.
