multi-million dollar fishing
industry began on the Fraser
River in 1870,
northern plant was estab-
lished six years later on the
Skeena River’s north arm at
a site then known variously
as Woodcock’s Landing,
Skeenamouth, Willa Clough
and Inverness. "

Today, two plants operate
along the six-mile Inverness
Passage and Porpoise Har-
bour: the Cassiar Packing
and the British Columbia
Packers.

The latter provides infor-
mative tours through its fish
processing plants to busloads
of visitors off tour ships and
ferries docking at nearby
Prince Rupert and to tourists
driving across: the province
on Yellowhead 16 and points
east.

Canning began when an
enterprising missionary,
Archdeacon W.H. Collison,
suggested the site for the
first cannery at Port Edward
to Colonel Lane, a represen-
tative of the fishing industry.

Collison led the visitor to the

water’s edge and pointed out — .

the Inverness Passage.

Lane was sold. He immedi-
ately started negotiating with
Woodcock for the property -
and the Inverness Cannery
was built.

- Although government re--

cords state the first 3,000

cases of red salmon was
processed in 1877, the plant
did operate briefly the
previous year. The Inverness
Cannery operated continu-
ously for 74 years before it
closed down in 1950.
