page Dear Editor: District Council has once again refused to set up a Housing Committee. In- stead, they have delegated the responsibility to make recommendations on housing to. the Advisory Planning Commission, which has no power. Just recently Council have set up a committees on all kinds of community concerns, and appointed aldermen to head them, but on housing, wh ich is a basic human need, they have again refused to do so. There are essentially two reasons why Council refused to provide leadership in that area. The last thing the d evelopers want is a commit- tee to look into non-profit housing. That would curtail. land speculation and the sale of expensive houses. That’s one their profits from reason. rs The other reason is that Council members think they will look good in the eyes of . the public. They think that people are against all forms ‘of non-profit housing and that it will cost them votes; although, they are quite prepared to take the t risk of im ae ee oe we Tone being unpopuar when it comes to housing which the developers want such as Grouse Mountain even though people neither need-— ed or wanted it. Dear Editor: Most people are missing the point about the new plastic milk bags. Besides’ being inconvenient—hard to store and costing more—they are a waster of our precious petroleum resource, as plas- tics are derived from petro- leum. It is true. that there are. some selfish people who are opposed to any form. of non-profit housing, but they are a small minority. The © large majority of people are far more intelligent and .responsible than they are given credit for by some members of our Council. What we need is a long term, rational and consistent | policy on housing, which reflects the real needs of our ‘community as part of creat- ing a healthy community neighborheood with a healthy mix of people, and a housing committee which can provide . leadership. .
