D'Arey’s brother Mark took over operation of MPD Security in England when D’Arcy came to the Vancouver area in 1987. D'Arcy has been an approved instructor with the B.C. Justice Institute and has taught the basic standard security course. People wanting to work in the security business must take the course to meet requirements of the Attorney General’s Security Programs Division. On one occasion, a former Russian diplomatic security specialist for past Soviet president Mikail Gorbachev was among those who took the course. “He did seem a bit over-qualified,” said D'Arcy, “but the private security industry is affected by its own dynamics.” The session in North Vancouver is the first offering of the personal bodyguard course that guarantees work to some of its graduating class. “We're looking for men and women who are mature, responsible, articulare, well-groomed and with some experi- ence in the police or military,” he said. Candidates should have international driver's licences and passports for travel to Europe. For the top graduates, the work in Europe can range from a few days of personal bodyguard work protecting children of Middle Eastern royal families to assignments of several months, accompanying royal families or Key representatives of governments on extended travels throughout the world. “We'll provide assistance with air fare to London and guar- anteed work assignments, each assignment varies in length, from days to weeks to months,” he said. MPD Security has connections with Middle Eastern embassies who call upon the firm for personal security ser- vices. “The clients can range from what we call Jitde princes to big princes,” he said. They are often accompanied by entourages on visits to almost anywhere in Europe. As an example of some the work, D’Arcy spent four months travelling with Prince Turki Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, brother of Kind Fahad of Saudi Arabia. The entourage trav- cled in two Boeing jets. The prince, members of his family and friends, numbering about 25, travelled in one jet. About 60 personal attendants including medical staff, secretaries, etc. travelled in the other jet. “We accompanied them to the Savoy Hotel in London, then on to Morocco as guests of King Hussein, then to Marrakesh. “We stayed in a palace in Tunisia, then went to the sourh of France where we stayed in private villas, and to southern Spain, where they also own villas. “These are clients who enjoy the very finest cf everything, they dine with gold-plated cutlery and are used to the very best in personal service,” he said. Hence the need for polished, mature people.
