In idle moments I like to let my eyes travel over its intricate whorls and grooves, spirals and spikes. Its hues of tan and pearl are as intriguing to the eye as its mtricate tex- tures are to the touch. But what is most striking is the lustrous smoothness of the inner shell, lined = with -BIG SELECTION | moues1 48 J THINKING SLIM A lesson from the sea mother-of-pearl the delicate color of a rosebud. The in- ner opening of the shell flares out into a = shape resembling an ear, and if | press it to my own, I can hear a sound like that of the pulsing of some ancient sea. When I first saw a picture of the animal that lives there, I was startled at its fleshy homeliness. Apart from its shell, the conch is certainly a lowly creature. There is a lesson to be learned from this humble animal.
