FROM PAGE C1 steerage is accomplished by varying the altitude with the firing of the burner and use of the manoeuvering vent. Thus, landing spots vary from day to day and it is partly for this reason that throughout the flight, radio contact is maintained between the balloon pilot and the mobile ground truck. Weather conditions for ballooning are usually best just after sunrise and before sunset when ideal light winds often occur. Con- traindications for flight are winds over ten miles per hour, rain, thermal con- ditions and poor visibility. As we floated over ver- dant golf clubs and quiet residential areas, we wat- ched early morning golfers tee off and couples enjoying their leisurely breakfast beside opal blue swimming pools. Surrounding us was a breathtaking panoramic view of the Santa Rosa Mountains to the west and the Salton Sea to the east. All too soon, it was time for our pilot to select an ap- propriate landing site, as we began cruising at a low alntude while the ground crew monitored the ground level winds. Because of a climatic change, our landing was to be a little faster than predicted, just over twice the normal walking pace of four miles per hour. The tnck I was advised, is to relax and bend one’s knees shghtly on impact. Skilfully we manocuvered between two huge balls of tumbleweed to make a safe landing just short of the tracking truck. While this flight was a ‘first’ for me, it was remarkable to think that man’s first romance with flght had begun exactly two HIGH in the alr, writer floats in a hot air balloon ad- miring the scenery.
