Bob Mackin Contributing Writer ROCK and roll isn’t pretty. And ocither is the inside cover of the Murder Ciw Devils’ third album, f1 Nawte and Bioed. & Tnstead of the usual band photos, each member of the Seattle septet (including roadie Gabe) is depicted in a very graphic murder scene photo, with a mugshot and fingerprint in the style of a coroner’s report. They were all “offed” in awful fashion during the album's produc- tion Dec. 8-10, 1999, “What's behind the con- cept? It’s kind of a story you can follow along, it goes along with the feeling of the record, I guess, just something that was at least interesting to look at,” said singer Spencer Moody on the phone from St. Louis. (The curly-haired, bespectacled Moody is listed as a “victim” of abdominal gouging with a broken bottle.) “A lot of records that come out just don’t have anything. Yeah, everyone had an amount of input on how they wanted to die.” . By contrast, the front cover is rather tame. It shows a blurry figure running through an alley near Seattle’s Pioneer Square with an inset of an open switchblade in a puddle of blood, a variation on the band’s symbol. “T kinda like the way it works with the cover and then you open it up and see all the other pic- .. tures in the layout. I like the way it works with the subtle photograph with the switchblade in the puddle.”. -- Moody said he’s surprised by the reaction so far. “T understand, but honestly, when I saw it all put together I thought i it looked really cool, but it was like an afterthouglathat some people would be shocked by it. 1 didn’t think about it that much.” Once newcomers get beyond the unsettling images, they'll be thrilled by the sounds on the disc, produced by John Agneilo (Screaming Trees, Dinosaur Jr.). The Murder City Devils have been heralded as the latest saviour of rock and roll for their gritty marriage of punk and glam, growing collection of tattoos and devil-may-care hard-drinking ethos. Moody's guttural, sometimes inaudible, vocals complete the package with Nate Manny and Dann Gallucei’s twin guitar assault, the rhythm section of bassist Derek Fudesco and drummer Coady Willis and the farfisa organ flourishes of Leslie Hardy. Yes, a woman has been drafted as a full-time member. Moody said it hasn’t affected the band’s dynamic one way or another. “It kinda got to the point where the organ photo Robin Laananen MURDER City Devils (Gabe, Dann Gallucci, Leslie Hardy, Coady Willis, Spencer Moody, Derek Fudesco and Nate Manny) play two nights at the Brickyard in Vancouver Aug. 25 and 26. songs were the ones that everybody agreed that they all really liked so it seemed like a good idea to bring in someone who could play them full time. Leslie fits in perfectly, she’s a dude.” The Murder City Devils play the Brickyard in Vancouver Aug. 25 and 26 to celebrate the Canadian release of In Name and Blood. Local indie label Scratch Records is distributing Jn Name and Blood north of the border, complete with a bonus 13th track three-minute perfor- mance video not available on the Sub Pop version. “It's kind of a treat for people to make the record special, I suppose,” Moody said. “Everybody likes to have something special.” The band will be playing a special al! ages show Aug. 24 in Bellingham’s Showoff Gallery as part of the Showoff or Shut-up Festival. It’s ; worth the drive to see a gig in the charming, yet dilapidated, 90-vear-old heritage building that once housed a chicken cannery near the Bellingham docks. Fran Page V4 925.7292.
