years after Parmar's death.

According to court intor-
mation, Berezowski and
other women were drinking
that November night in 1993
at the Squamish Hotel, later
renamed the Ocean Point.
Parmar, who had been drink-
ing, jcined  Berezowski’s
table. A’ sleeping pill was
secretly placed in Parmar’s

Berezowski’s lawyer Susan
Daniels said that her client is
remorseful.

Daniels detailed
Rerezowski's troubled Hte,
which included recent suicide
attempts. Berezowski was
three when her mother died
of cancer.

Berezowski and her three
sisters had a difficule child-
hood being raised by their
father, a miner who was an
aicoholic.

Berezowski has 2 Grade 7
education and can’t write,
said her lawyer. Berezowski
was in and our of foster care

Berezowski has hepatitis

C asa result of a blood trans-
fusion following the birth of
one of her two children, now
age six and nine.

Berezowski had an abu-
sive Marriage.

In recent sears,
Berezowski’s children have
been in the care of the
Ministry of Children and
Families or her ex husband’s
First Nations relatives.

Berezowski has been in
women’s prison since she was
charged more chan 10
months ago.

The Crown lawyer asked
for a five- to eight-year jail
sentence less the time
Berezowski had already
served.

The defence Jawver asked

client’s efforts to take courses
and improve herself in jail, as
well as her remorse in court.

A charge of manslaughter,
the killing of a person with
out sufficient intent to be
considered murder, carries a
maximum life sentence.

In passing sentence, Judge
Burdett said that
Berezowski’s apology at this
stage “has more to do with
the remorse of getting caught
rather than her actions.”

Jaswinder, 39, made the jour-

February when the sentene-
ing was adjourned because
