The results were — well — criminal. The current price tag to our system fora robbery? $224,175. How about a burglary? $137,689. And every time someone is defrauded by a piece of criminal offal? $195,970. Brantingham’s calculations were based on ‘such factors as loss to the victim, the cost of. ‘police work, criminal prosecution, defence, adjudication and the average daily cost of putting someone in jail. Crime prevention. Because the loss suffered by the victim in any crime is only the initial cost in an expen- sive and lengthy | process that ends up keeping lawyers in Jaguars and draining the wallets - of honest taxpayers. The numbers also present. a good argu- ment for making the criminal responsible for more than just paying with his or her free-" dom. Crime should cost the criminal financially. |. The bill run up in the course of dealing ~ with crime should be part of the debt a crim- -.. inal pays to society, whether it be paid in cash. or hard labor that would benefit the commu. nity. a If crime doesn’t start costing the criminal: more than the victim and the rest of society, we will never be able to convince would-be. thugs that crime doesn’t pay. The message amid the numbers? bers themselves against the threat of intimidation. Meanwhile, an end to the closed ‘shop would stop the scandal of workers being forced, against their will, to join a union or starve, as well as being compelled to support with their dues political activities they do not endorse. ea A far tougher crackdowsi on |: picket-line violence — maybe by holding union bosses accountable in law along with actual offenders ° — is long overdue. * And in this fiercely competitive global economy a direct personal stake by employees :in their compa-. ny’s profitability makes simple comunon sense. . The CAFU goal is voluntary union membership by workers gen- uinely sold on union services;‘as opposed to being forcibly con- scripted into private armies.
