Campers share fun and ordeals A GROUP of young burn vic- tims just returned from sum- mer camp, a five-day adven- ture made possible thanks to the B.C. Fire Fighters Burn Fund. By A.P. McCredle News Reporter The first annual summer camp for kids burned in accidents wrapped-up yesterday as the 20 campers Icft the camp in Brackendale to return to their homes throughout British Columbia. Like all summer camps, the kids enjoyed swimming, hiking, kayak- ing, horseback riding and arts and crafis. Unlike other summer camps, however, the camp is staffed by doctors, nurses, therapists and fire- fighters. “The purpose of the Burm Carp is to offer these kids the opportuni- ty to meet others who have experi- enced what they’ve gone through,” Community Bulletin Board YOUTH AIDS FORUM... The Seymour Youth Ceatre is hosting a youth forum on Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) today, Friday, july 22, at 4 p.m. The forum is designed to give youth the opportunity to discuss the effects of the disease on societies’ youth and young adults. FAMILY KITE-MAKING DAY... The West Vancouver recre- ation centre is giving people of all ages the opportunity to go make, and fly, a kite. Since many young burn victims have visible scars from their injuries, self-esteem and self-confi- dence —~ fragile commadities at best during childhood years ¢ often low. The purpose of the Burn Camp is to let them know they are not alone und to help foster a posi- tive outlook. The Fire Fighters Burn Fund was established in 1976 to raise money for life-saving and life-giv- ing projects. Programs that have been financed by the fund in the past include burn unit equipment purchases for the Vancouver General Hospital anu the produc- tion of videos, including Just Another Fire Cracker which wams people of the danger of fire crack- ers. The Burn Camp, and the gen- erosity of provincial firefighters, allowed many families that could not afford to send their children to summer camp a chaace to let their kids feel a little more normal.
