“Brad Ledwidge BRIGHT LIGHTS SOGGY WEATHER didn't dampen the spirits of partici- pants in iast Sunday's Ciam Chowder Covk-off at North Vancouver's Waterfront Park. Twenty-two teams compated in the popular annual event, now in its 10th year, and mat the challenge of preparing a chowder from scratch. The cook-off was divided into tive categories: open, for individ- uals and community groups; business; professionals, for food industry representa- tives; HeartSmart; and 911, for hospital workers and emergency services person- nel. Duso’s, the overail winner, watked away with the Rete McKay Award of Excetlence, named after the founder of the cock-off. The Clampets — the North Shore News’ team of Kirk Michael, Judy Gustafson, Angela Hives, Victoria Adam and scrutineer Lynn Chan — placed third in the business category with thelr tasty recipe. NORTH SHORE News mascot “Read" samples the News team's chowder that had the crowds lining up for a taste. One surprise ingredient of the award-winning recipe was escargot. OVER 340 of B.C.’s “special children” took part in the Variety Club’s 10th annual Grouse Mountain Picnic last Wednesday, July 13. The physically and mentally handicapped youngsters and underprivileged kids were treated to a barbecue, face- painters, and clowns.
