IS IT possible that our Jove affair with youth is finally ending? Carol Grenna Seah Now that thirty-something women are associated with dirty diapers, and successful businesswomen are seen.as pop culture icons, older women are becoming the metaphor for female sex appeal. Why did it take current televi- sion stars, mega-models and magazine editors to tell North Americans what the French have known forever? In praise of maturing women, the North Shore News gave two individuals the opportunity to rethink their personal style, allow- ing their most stellar assets to shine. Both women are over 40, and though they have very different lifestyles and needs, both felt the urge for.a dramatic change in Le ~ North § their appearance, With the aid of a well-respected wardrobe consultant, hair stylist and makeup technician, these two North Vancouver residents are given new polish, self-esteem and resolve, Was it easy? Yes! Often, the difference between so-so and sensational is simply a matter of confidence. Letting go of outdated personal images, realizing your best features and working with them, will give your looks an updated edge that better represents you and your age. Here is a step-by-step guide to the ‘‘new you,'’ which you can take with make-over models Donna Morrison and Joan Fradera, Both women look reniarkably young for their ages, but needed a lift to their style and their spirits. Donna Morrison is 42 years old, and is married with a 28-month- ald son. She is a nurse working part-time as a counsellor for a health agency. Morrison requested a make- over because she feels ‘‘frumpy.’’ She has gained weight since her pregnancy and now many of her clothes won’t fit. For her new job, which does not require her to wear a uniform, she would like a more professional image. Morrison describes herself as “not much of a risk-taker and too ‘conservative.’ She says: that makeup has always intimidated her, and she would be embarrass- ed to show anyone her closet AFTER: JOAN Fradera is given a more youthful Jook and mor tefined business wardrobe by make-over experts Kathy Chan, Diana Kilgour, and Sharyne Herbert. BEFORE: DONNA MORRISON because it is full of items she no longer wears and hasn't for years. The first step to Morrison's metamorphosis is styling her hair. Hair technician and salon owner Kathy Chan explains that Mor- rison’s hair is naturally curly on the sides and straight on the top. This limits styling unless she cither straightens the sides or has the top permed to even out the texture. Chan worked with the natural hair, giving Morrison a smoother look and more volume through the sides and more height and slight curl on top by simply using a blow dryer. She cropped the hair to the chin, took off the length at the back, and layered the sides back off her face, Chan says that Morrison’s flat but wavy sides were dragging her face down, emphasizing the length of her face, whereas the added volume, height on top and spiked bangs highlight her delicate, femi- nine bone structure and her eyes. Chan darkened her light ‘‘mouse brown’’ hair to give it more depth and richness, changing it to a copper chestnut shade by Goldweli called Vesuvian. This brings out the warmth in Mor- rison’s complexion. Chan emphasizes that styling aids are very important to finish, ‘and uses A.G. gel for contro] and spray shine for an extra healthy look. To find clothing that fluttered Morrison’s figure, is profe:sional enough for the office and fits her well was a bit of a challenge for wardrobe and image consultant Diana Kilgour. Their first shopping trip was not successful, Kilgour stresses, however, that BEFORE: JOAN FRADERA NEWS photos Mike Wakefieis AFTER: DONNA Morrison’s new haircut, makeup and wardrobe make the most of her fine bone structure and warm coioring. this often happens, but the woman should not feel that it is a reflection on her. " ‘Sometimes everybody can’t find: clothing that works, and some clothes don’t work on everybody.”” ‘ Morrison thought it was simply her lack of dressing savvy that made it difficult to shop, but when Kilgour reaffirmed her belief that her body shape was hard to fit, and they would work with it to find solutions, this gave her confidence in her own judgment. Kilgour confirms, ‘‘They cali- brate their own antennae for what looks and feels good.’’ : Though Morrison had always Shopped for iteris to hide her curves, Kilgour encouraged her to show her shape, keeping away from masculine tailoring and toward romantic styling with soft fabrics to complement her femi- nine facial features, Since her upper body is a smaller size than her lower body, Kilgour chose separates instead of a suit. These included a Mr. Jax crop- ped jacket to emphasize her waist, a shorier skirt to reveal her legs (which are one of her best features), and well-fitting pants by Steilmann which have pleats at the top and are narrow at the hem, ail at Compliment Fashions. Kilgour suggested wearing brighter, multi-colored and printed fabrics in rich blues, greens and fuchsias to work with her warm coloring, instead of Morrison’s usual white and solid dark colors. Morrison’s daily makeup routine was very basic since she admitted that she had never learn- ed how to apply it properly. Using Chanel cosinetics, make- up technician. and Frais Visage . : esthetics salon owner - Sharyne « Herbert gave Morrison a day look « which enhanced her perfect com- plexion and fine bone structure. Herbert used an oil-free foun- dation in soft bisque as a base. .' She stressed, “‘It is very impor- tant to blend. You may have done the worst makeup job, but if it is all blended thoroughly, it will look great.’’ She dotted ona light cover stick in a large ‘‘V’’ shape below her eye, which was then blended up- wards directly beneath the eye and ° toward the temple to take away hollows and highlight the cheekbone. She then applied Chanel Perfecting Powder in daylight shade (in downward strokes so that facial hair does not stick up) to even out skin tone. For Morrison’s eyes, Herbert added Chanel’s matte shadows in muted violet and chestnut on ei- ther side of the lid and peach in the centre. Eyes were lined with brown pencil liner on the outer two-thirds of the upper lid and outer one-third of the lower lid.
