Joy Metcalfe JOY TELLS ALL THE SUN shone brightly as friends and family gathered at St. Francis in the Wood Church on Wednesday afternoon to say farewell to the late Ed Keate. Ed pass- ed away in Lions Gate Hospital from throat cancer They were on deck one very dark night when a lady next to them spotied scmeone in the water calling for help. The captain was alerted and the big ship was turned back to search the Carib- bean waters. Finally with the aid of flares and searchlights, they located the man and got him on board. After bedding him down in the ship’s infirmary, they discovered to their surprise that the man was not one of the ship’s passengers. How he got into the middle of the Caribbean waters, no one knew — but everyone gossiped. Some five days later, the crew brought him up on deck for some fresh air and sunshine. As thev reached the railing, he broke free of them and leaped over! A lifeboat was immediately lowered and two of the crew jumped into the water and wrestl- ed him into the boat. Back on board the obviously confused fellow was confined to their brig. Inveterate travellers Georgia and Brian caught both rescues on tape, extolling the virtues of the Noordam’s Capt. Ed was my first boss when ! wrote an entertainment column in his Gastown Guardian some 22 years ago. It was the opening of the new Zee’s On The Edge, formerly Cafe Splash. It’s owned and operated by Ziad Batal and his partner, Kareem Larbes, while Jim Bowen is the new chef. Zee also owns the restaurant that operates within the North Shore Film Studios. So there were a goodly number of North Shore film foik on hand like Connie and Bob Gray, Hagan Beggs and the very tanned Dale Wilson. Fitness guru Ron Zalko was also guesting along with Jawyer Steve Sobolewski, and his friend, Joe Peters, the owner of the Hemlock Valley Ski Resorts. Others supping and sipping were John Livingstone and his lady, Jane mis; Brian Calder and Barry Gilpin of Cheapskates One, Two, Three and now Fore, along with PR man Thomas R.
