Joy Metcalfe JOY TELLS ALL WHILE THE 77th annual Pacific National Exhibition is over for this year, I hard- ly think that it was lucky 77 Even without the downpour during the final week, attendance figures were way down. The good news is that someone who is way up on cloud nine is the North Shore’s George Jacobs. He and his wife, Christine, and their three grown children live right on the border between North and West Vancouver. They were the ecstatic winners of the 1991 PNE prize home. Their phone went crazy im- mediately after their win was an- nounced. The item is that George and Christine had no idea of their good fortune until CKNW news called. They hadn’t attended the fair or even seen the architectur- ally designed house! The winning ticket was bought for them by a close friend who happened to be vacationing with them. You can bet that she'll always be a welcome guest. George tells me that since they al- ready have their own home, they plan to sell their newest acquisi- tion... Lions Bay resident, author and broadcaster Terry Moore and his son, Pan Pacific Hotel chef Patrick Moore, attracted great crowds to their Celebrity Cooking Show at the PNE. Terry says that some 15,500 people attended the 72 shows over the course of the fair. They created tasty tortellini dishes, using some 70 pounds of tortellini and 80 pounds of Flet- cher’s ham, and turkey and Etalian spicy sausage. Sunday, September 8 8, 1991 - North Shore News - 19 COCKTAILS & CAVIAR Besides dilty dill bread and B.C. seafood chowder, they also created a molle of turkey, beef and sausage with the secret ingre- dient being Purdy’s semi-sweet chocolate! The only disappointment for Terry and Patrick was that they almost had Brian Mulroney on Stage, cooking up a storm. The prime minister had agreed to make a surprise appearance last Thursday but the heavens opened, the rains came down, and the PM cancelled. The good news is that, through their 12-hour day efforts and even washing their own dishes, Terry has been approached by cookware manufacturers and cook book publishers for some new business opportunities ... Someone who rarely fishes, and this particular time, really wishes he hadn't, is a fellow who has been a fixture in the world of advertising and communications for the past 20-odd years, Sentinel Hill's Neil Soper. He was there merely as part of the promotion team with the Vancouver Sun and CKNW and decided at the last minute to try his luck with the rod. As he went ever the side, Neil's foot caught in the Boston whaler’s Tizging. Fortunately he was wearing a full floatation outfit. But he did suffer a broken femur, as well as a severed artery and badly cut right hand. Wing Chu was OK but suffered a cut face. Again luck was with Neil. A doctor was nearby and there was a helicopter at the lodge to whisk him away immediately to hospital in Campbell River. About ten days ago, Neil was transferred to University Hospital at UBC. (As he quipped to the nurses there, he'd always wanted to go to UBC.) i'm happy to report that he’s recovering very nicely.. Speaking of treasuring your good health, restaurateurs Willy and Marta Brueckel of the charm- ing Ambleside Inn have just in- Stituted an interesting new facet to their dining experience. So good on you guys! ... Kudos, too, to the manager of the Maplewood Farms in North Vancouver, April Johnston. Last Saturday night at the height of the electrical storm, one of the cows began to give birth. She didn't have time to try and locate the vet so she handled the situation alone with the lights flickering, the lightning flashing and the thunder booming. At ihe end of a very tough night, Maplewood Farms had a new but very large baby bull calf. Because he was born during the raging storm, they’re considering calling him Stormin’ Norman ...
