8 - Friday, December 9. 1988 - North Shore News Ze Marsox Towers vote gives council a message Dear Editor: The Capilano Public Lands Committee was gratified by the response of West Vancouver resi- dents to the referendum questions of Nov. 19. A majority of citizens, from one end of the community to the other, voted to stop high-rise construc- tion at the intersection of Taylor Way and Marine Drive. Since this is the first time since the 1950s that citizens have been directly con- sulted about the subject, their response is to be noted: the com- munity is not well-disposed towards new high-rise construc- tion. Residents registered this negative yote despite thousands of dollars spent by the municipality and the developer promoting the twin tower development. Indeed, had it not been for the North Shore News’ generous and impartial coverage of the issue, the bulldozers would probably already be on the site. Our committee looks forward to working with the new council in an open, consultative review of all alternative uses of the municipally-owned land at 320 Taylor Way. We see this as an op- portunity to develop a model pro- cess for consultation between the community and its municipal gov- ernment, We welcome it. We are also prepared to help other West Vancouver residents who face threats to the quality of life in their neighborhood. Roff Johannson, chairman Capilano Public Lands Committee Editor’s note: In the municipal elections in West Vancouver, 5,851 voted yes for high-rise use for the © 320 Taylor Way site while 5,879 voted na, Writer does not understand voters Dear Editor: The elections are over with many surprises, but the biggest surprise to me was the election of Svend Robinson, a proclaimed homosex- ual. A vote for him was an endorse- ment cf homosexuality and -les- bianism. I am surprised at people (other than the above) overlooking this fact. Surely we have enough corrup- tion in politics without putting people like that in public office. Soon they will be telling people who are straight that they are odd- balls. I can’t understand voters con- doning such behavior. J.H.
