Recessed fixtures are expecially useful for lighting low-cciling areas such as a basement recreation room, You can also supplement the general lighting of a beautiful chandelier with functional and dramatic recessed downlighting over dining anc serving areas. R.vessed lighting can be an im- portant part of your decorating scheme. For example, use wall washers or eyeballs to make a small room seem larger by accen- ting the walls with light. Use dimmer controls to make a large room seem cozier and to softly light a conversation area. Dramatize the texture of brick, stone, wood or draperies. Use eyeballs to spotlight bookshelves, paintings, sculpture, prized prints or wall hangings. Show off plants with the interplay of light and shadow. There are many different recess- ed fixtures available. The open downlight generally gives the most illumination. A fresnel lens con- trels and spreads the light with minimum glare. A white glass diffuser distributes light evenly. A drop opal diffuser extends below the ceiling line to spread light. A wall washer directs light to one side to illuminate a vertical surface. EYEBALLS AIMEI Eyeballs project below the ceil- ing line and can be aimed at an area or object. Eyeballs can also be used to light walls or shelving units. To light an entire area, space round or square recessed fixtures evenly so the distance between them is not more than their distance from the floor (er the distance from table tops or work surfaces). Around the perimeter, they should be no more than 900 mm (36'') from the walis. Dimmer controls can save energy, extend bulb life and let you adjust lighting levels in the room for various oc- casions. Direct fight to work, play and study areas — such as kitchen © work surfaces, sewing machines, desks and the home handyman’s work table. Install downlights that use 100 to 150w A-lamps. In- by placing the eyeballs closer together. FIXTURES AND WALLS To bring out the dimension of textured walls and draperies, in- stall your recessed fixtures closer to the wall. Here are some guidelines. For drapery ~- use a downlight with a 75w R-30 lamp. Each fix- ture centerline should be 225 mm (9) apart from the drapery and 450 mm (18°) apart on centers. If even lighting is not preferred, locate fixtures 750 mm (30°’) apart on centers. Brick or stone walls — you can use the same 75w R-30 fixtures and locati. 2 measurements as for draperies. Or you can use 50w R- 20 recessed fixtures placed 150 mm (6’’) from the wall and 300 mm (12”") apart on centers. Lighting artwork and objects — for a large picture or grouping us: a fixture with a 75w R-30 flood lamp, such as wall washers. Locate wall wazh fixtures 600 mm (2)-feet from the wall, 600 mm (2)-feet apart, measured on centers, clean look For 3,000 mm (10)-foot ceilings, fixtures should be 900 mm (3)-feet apart, 900 mm (3)-feet from the wall. An eyeball with a SOw R-20 bulb also could be useful. To minimize reflected glare from the artwork, install an adjustable eyeball slightly to the side of the picture. Adjustable eyeballs are also ex- cellent for lighting sculpture. Lighting walls can create visual interest, make a room seem larger and improve the general lighting level. Choose wail washers or eyeballs according to the style you prefer and wattage you want.
