LESLIE GORDON, co-owner of the North Shore’s newest art gallery, has a history of disagreement and reconciliation with her business partner. woop and bronze sculptures-madge by artist Jeff Shale are on display at North Vancouver's Sharii Gallery, along with works by other Canadian artists. Tne exhibit was officially opened last Wednesday. \ CHILDRENS CJ FASH ION SEIS That’s not unusual — especiaily since her partner is her mother. “I'm the only person I know of who is running a gallery with her mother,’’ says Leslie, one half of the mother-daughter team that hosted the opening of Sharli Gallery recently. “Ail partnerships have their agreements and disagreements. But we have a good 50-50 relationship — we're both bosses.”’ NO TROUBLES Mother Sharon doesn’t foresee any disciplinary troubles ahead either. She can’t think of a better person to work with. “| had no hesitations in doing this with Leslie,’? Sharon said. “We're working as equals. It’s the only way to conduct a business."’ Both newcomers to the art community, the opening of Sharli (a combination of the names Sharon and Leslie) marks a first- time venture for the mother- daughter team. And if opening night’s atten- dance is any indication, the first- time venture looks like it may be a successful one. More than 500 patrons passed through Sharli’s doors at 53 Lonsdale to view works by 20 B.C. painters, potters and sculptors. - NEWS photo Mike Wekefleld INAUGURAL SHOW The inaugural show featured more than 100 paintings and 100 * RICHMOND CENTRE 273-4323 + PACIFIC CENTRE 669-2513 * GUILDFORD TOWN CENTRE 536-2622 * LANSDOWNE PARK 278-6334 . Gallery director Lyle Johnston says Sharli will satisfy an unfilled need for more gallery space on the North Shore. “About four times as many people came than we had ex- pected,’’ says Johnston. ‘‘Being a brand new gallery, we didn’t ex- pect a large showing — about 150 people at the most. It verified my suspicion that another gallery is needed on the North Shore. We hope to fill that bill.’’ EXPANSIVE GALLERY The gallery — a large open space — may be the North Shore’s most expansive art showcase, says the director. Unlike most galleries, Johnston says Sharli will be more appealing for viewers thanks to nearly 2,500 Awar square feet of space. While other galleries restrict themselves to two or three artists at one time, Johnston says Sharli’s size allows for a versatile mix of watercolors, oils, pen and ink and sculpture. “During major shows we'll feature possibly four or five artists at once,’’ Johnston says. ‘“We’re striving to fill about 90 per cent of the gallery with B.C. artists. We will show other Canadian works, of course, but our priority is to showcase the local talent.’* Mother and daughter hope the gallery at the foot of Lonsdale will become a haven for new B.C. ar- tists. . “There’s a great amount of tal- ent in the province,’’ says Sharon Gordon. ‘‘We’d like to have shows for unknowns. We want to back them 100 per cent. They deserve to be noticed and we intend to give them space.” Sharli’s current show wil! run until the end of February. oo INTERIORS LTD. 4985 P.N.E.
