Lawrence Iwasaki, owner of Maison Lawrence Cuif- fures at 541 Seymour Street in Vancouver, said his brief- case containing the jewelry was stolen froin the office of his hairdressing salon at ap- proximately 5 p.m. Thurs- day, after the back door to the building had been ac- cidentally left open. “*T was just combing out a client's hair for two minutes and when | came back to the office, the briefcase was gone,” says Iwasaki. In a surprisingly jovial frame of mind, Iwasaki told the News Friday that the small fortune of jewels, which included a seven-carat diamond ring and a four- carat diamond necklace, was part of his normal personal ensemble: ‘‘I usually wear the stuff. I’m a kind of a flashy guy, they call me Liberace the second. But it just so happened that I had left them in the briefcase yesterday and now they're gone.”’ ‘te | By TIMOTHY RENSHAW | Iwasaki says Thursday's theft is the second time he has paid for his flam- boyance. In an earlier theft from the same salon, he says he lost $200,000 worth of personal jewelry. “So this is it, no more jewels, [t's just not worth jt.”’ SECOND THEFT Acting Cpl. Robert Creech of the Vancouver police says the briefcase was taken in a “snatch and grab’’ style theft between 4:45 and 5:50 p.m. The thief, he says, is still at large and none of the jewels have been recovered thus far. A police investiga- tion into the theft is continu- ing. As to why he had no in-_ surance on his jewels, Iwasaki simply said that in- surance policies on jewelry are ‘‘pretty expensive, Escort owner under fire ESCORT OPERATOR Carol McNeill is under fire from North Vancouver City Council. The local businesswoman has been asked for the se- cond time to appear before council to convince Mayor Loucks and aldermen that her businesses are not fronts for prostitution, and to show cause why her business licences should not be revoked, This time, however, the request is regarding her Comfort Zone Escorts operation. McNeill was first asked to appear July 22 to show cause why her business licence for Interlude Escorts should not be revoked. But | would doubt any company would insure any amount of jewels if they found out the prospective policy-holder planned to walk around with those jewels in a briefcase.”’ Iwasaki regards his loss with good-humored philosphical bravado, ‘‘I mean what can I do. The jewels are not my life. The most valuable things lost are my business papers, my ad- dress book, and my credit cards."’ Iwasaki says he is offering a reward, as yet undetermin- ed, ‘‘but probably a couple of thousand’, for the return of the briefcase and its con- tents. Tut McNeill and lawyer Tim Maledy filed a petition in the Supreme Court of B.C. to find council’s re- quest out of order. North Van City Council approved a motion 6-1 put forth by Ald. Stella Jo Dean Monday, requesting McNeill show cause why her business licence should not be revok- ed. See City Page 5
