Harvest of feelings

here’s no corn in Country.
Jessica Lang’s new film Country is a
down-to-earth story about an American far-
ming community caught up in the crippling

economics of the 1980s.

Set in the state of North
Dakota, Country chronicles
the plight that so many fam)-
ly farms have faced in the last

few years, and in some cases_-

lost out to.

There’s no
farming.

The tvy family finds itself
facing the fact tharmit is apt to
lose the land that has been its
living for generations. In a
dazzling display of acting,
Jessica Lange as the spirited,
capable Jewell Ivy teams up
with Sam Sheppard as her
husband Gil Ivy to deliver an
academy performance.

Set in the musical score of
‘wailing fiddle music, Jewell
sand Gil are believable coun-
tury characters, wanting only
to get on with the job of rais-
ing their famjy and working
the land. They are not super
heros who put down thei
hoes and pick up a gun to
drive the banks and book
keepers off their land.
