Ferry Corporation, but they’ll still face what they consider to be unfair increases in ferry fares, starting today. Georg Helenius, the island’s Greater Vancouver Regional District representative and a member of the committee fighting the increases, says it will be late January before the mecting takes place. Unyl then, he says, resi- dents face the prospect of paying as much as 84 per cent more for the crossing than they have. The committee won the decision to face-off against the board of directors at a meeting of residents Wednes- day. It was called in reaction to a 50 cent across-the-board cul in) proposed increases which residents welcomed bul said wasn't enough Helenius said the fight will centre on passenger fares, which he calls ‘‘ridiculous”’ ‘The car fares aren't bad, but the 50 cent reduction ac- tually throws cverything into a mess,’’ Helenius said Fri- day. *‘On some runs, some people will be paying six per cent tess while some of the fares will still go up by as much as 84 per cent.’’ ““Off-island people who own property here or who are visiting can actually get a return fare for six per cent less,’” he said. ““The day-to- day commuter will have to pay 48 per cent more. That's where the real objection is to- day. If it weren't for the com- muters, the ferries wouldn't have any traffic at all,” Helenius said the commit- tee will attempt to-.convince the beard that it should roll back increases to 10 or 15 per cent. “But it’s going to be an uphill struggle from now on,’’ he says.
