By PETER LORIMER No one individual is greater than the whole of the team. That is one of the keys to a player's success with the Vancouver Whitecaps, and it is one of the major reasons some teams have trouble finding the win columns. Our system is the no-star style of hard work. © A player with all the skill level in the world but who can't be a team player will never wear a Whitecap unfiorm. Looking back at last season when we ran into injuries all season long you realize we were forced to shift players and positions continually in order to come up with a competitive team. By and large it worked. While we didn't win the championship, we did come up with a good number of wins and a strong effort. Interchangability played a key role. The players could go wherevér they were needed to do their best for the team whether or not it was their best or favorite position. Peter Beardsley moved from striker to midfield, and 1 moved the opposite way. And on one memorable occasion, Willie Johnston moved from winger to fullback and did a heck of a job that night in a totally unfamihar role. Our back line was also forced to make changes and just like the rest of us, no one complained. All players must have exceptionally high = skill levels when they come to us. There is no way that we're going to teach a player when to pass, when to make a run or when to take a shot. If he doesn’t have those skills at INDUSTRIAL SOCCER FINAL Hard work and character this stage, he’s not going to find us teaching them. But along with the skill, the single most important attribute a player needs for the Whitecap system is the right attitude or “character.” It’s the character that has won games for us when we probably should have lost — and has kept us in many games over the years. One example is our game against Chicago last year at Empire Stadium. The game ws tied 1-1 and we were under pressure when Ray Hankin was sent off. But despite the fact we were only playing ICR Nobby Stiles, our youth coach, is great at drawing this extra character out of young players. Nobby was a perfect example of what I’m talking about. He was a small man with poor eyesight and limited skills. But with hard work and desire he rose to be a key element in England’s 1966 World Cup win. As a youth coach Nobby can help youngsters see the excitement and fun in pushing beyond what they thought they were capable of and finding a new aspect, or depth, to themselves. 1S WITH THE CAPS with 10 men we scored two goals to win the game.
