Only minor injuries caused TORONTO (UPC) - Nearly four inches of ac- cumulated rain cracked roof supports and brought down a section of a department store near closing time, miraculously causing only minor injuries to three persons, an Etobicoke fire department spokesman said. Firemen searched the debris several times but found no other victims in the drug department of the store located in the Rexdale section of the borough of Etobicoke, deputy fire chief _ Ross Bissell said Tuesday. Authorities said the entire mall, located tiorthwest of Toronto, would be closed until an investigation of the roof structure was com- pleted. According to witnesses, about 3,000 square feet of the roof, closest to the store’s link with the Albion Mall shopping complex, began to leak about 45 minutes before the store’s 10 p-m. closing time. Minutes later it collapsed, sending chunks of debris flying toward late shoppers. “I was in the north end of PET CORNER the store,” said Mike D'Eatag, one of the late shoppers who managed to escape. “Then I heard a great big crash around five to nine (p.m.). Then the roof came down and all the water started pouring in. “Then I heard screams. A lady started running out. She said, “My husband’s un- derne&’th there.” Me and a couple of store managers tried to get in to get at the guy. We couldn't get at him because the hydro (power) was still on,” he said. However, the most serious injury reported was a broken ankle, police said. Most shoppers. had already left the store, and Officials said that if the collapse had occurred 15 minutes earlier, hundreds of people could have been trapped. A spokeswoman at Etobicoke General Hospital said at least three persons were undergoing examinations there.
