Louise Aird BRIGHT LIGHTS OUR HUNDRED West Vanners plunked down $125 for ‘An Evening with Mark & Friends,’’ hosted by the Committee to Elect Mark Sager. | expected the dinner, which took place at the Waterfront Centre, to be dull, It wasn’t. If you're wondering (many were), the party wasn’t held over here because, said Sager, we're not allowed to make any noise. The hotel’s GM, Michael Kaile, is a West Van resident, though. During cocktails, while the iron-gripped mayor greeted guests, | spoke to Park Royal Hotel owner Orrie Holubitsky, who will, this week, marry longtime PRH staffer Fuschia Hornby. Orrie chatted with Simone De- jaray, Fuschia’s best friend, and her husband Steve. The Dejarays, Sager’s neighbors, are avid boaters, but they’d rather have Eagle Harbour beach back and are involved in the movement’ — quiet thus far — to close Eagle Harbour Yacht Club (it’s widely believed that, until the boats are gone, the bay will remain unflushable). | met the builders of my dream house on Evergreen —- Dick and Delona Alexander (as in Dick's Lumber). They sold the house — to the aptly named Windsors — and are now in an Ambleside condo where someone else wor- ries about the lawn. The Alexanders were with their daughter Kares: and son-in-law Paul Reano. Paul owns Ferguson Moving & Storage which, he says, will not return to West Van. As you'll recall, an arsonist destroyed Ferguson's, but Paul has happily reopened on Mountain Highway where his storage facility is solid cement. Sager’s campaign manager, Eric Termansen, sure knows how to do a seating plan. On my left was Bowen hunk Jason Jennings, there with mom Karmen and realtor brother John. Jason has just graduated from Western Michigan University where he was playing hockey and is now seeking a spot on a pro team. On my right was dashing Jason Hodge, there with the politically active Tamara Romanuk. Hodge has also just come home, post-Appleby and -Upper Canada College, and is co-owner of new printing company Bond Reproduc- tions, Also at our table was pianist Alyssa Wentworth, a Julliard grad who was part of the entertainment ~~ as were Sentinel Hill's Blues Brothers & Sisters, guitarist Paul Schmidt, and Sager’s friend Valdy, who had the crowd participating in “Earth Rap.’’ No, I’m not kid- ding. TheatreSports had the crowd doing other things — mouth exer- cises and slow-motion hand clap- ping. Then they improvised sket- ches of Sager’s life. There were two memorable skits -- One about Sager’s Grade 5 job of hoisting the Elmer the Safety EI- ephant flag each morning; and another about how Hank Sager wanted Mark to be a golfer and thought he was crazy to go into politics. Replied Mark: ‘‘My heart is as large as Parliament — | shall fill those seats.’ Well, | guess you had to be there. The emcee, ex-councillor John Humphries, talked about how Mark works hard at life. That’s for sure, If | understand correctly, Sager got a degree in philosophy, com- pleted law school, adopted a son, sat as a councillor and clerked for the Court of Appeal — at once. ‘tow, he practises law, sits on the GVRD Finance Committee and acts as mayor. Whatever vitamins he’s taking, | want some. Sager spoke -—- about his mayoral focus on youth programs and on getting people to com- promise on land use (he also pointed out that West Van has its highest-ever surplus). About rumors that he’s after the Socred leadership, Sager said he won't rule it out, and that if asked to help bring in responsible lead- ership, he will, saying ‘We can’t just criticize — we must seek qualified candidates to provide stability.” This remark led to the subject of Sager's revolt against new taxes in- troduced by the Notoriously Dopey Party. On this issue, Sager said ‘‘Punitive taxes and property surcharges have no place in the planning of the future of B.C.” Which brings us to the reasons for this love-fest. No one has been declared as a Sager opponent. No one is ex- pected to. Just in case though, he needs $50,000 as backup. There’s another reason — Sager paid for the Great Tax Revolt out of his own pocket. Guess he wants his money back. , kw * On a completely different note... lf you love beer, get your mug down to the Vancouver Museum tomorrow at 6 p.m. for Van- couver’s first-ever Beer Festival.
