20 - Sunday, September 19, 1999 — North Shore News Michel Comte Contributing Writer PRE-ELECTION opponent-bashing started early this year with Coun. Victor Durman taking shots at Coun. Bill Soprovich at Monday’s council meeting. Durman accused Soprovich of grandstanding and promoting himself for revealing during the one- hour mecting that he had vis- ited E-Comm_ headquarters last week to get a perspective of their operations. Couneil is currently delib- erating whether to abandon E-Comm —~ which now pro- vides 9-1-]) emergency tele- phone service to West Vancouver — in favor of a new North Shore based 9-1-1 emergency call centre. “Personal actions by coun- cillors don’t need to be dis- cussed at council meetings,” Durman said. Such actions are best reported in the city’s newslet- ter, he said. Though the visit was cst side Soprovich’s regular offi- cial duties as a councillor, he angrily retorted that he was simply getting all the facts to help him decide how to vote event at ice Sports, and we'll guarantee a white Christmas. - Weekend Prime fce Time only $225/ir Book your times now! - Ice Sports Winter Festival & Craft Fal Sunday, November 28 924-0828. zait Mount Seymour Parkway (ct zerkeey) - North: Vancouver ectioneering begins on the issue and reporting back to counci) what he saw. “Victor is a good guy, but I won't take any crap from any one of those councillors,” Soprovich said in a telephone interview Tuesday. “H Pd only done it one time, then it could be seen as electioncering, but 1 always do this, that’s how I operate. I try to visit everything that is on the agenda to be informed. “It's fine to read it on a report, but I like to see what Pm making a decision on, so that my decisions are based on good information.” For his part, Durman said he challenged Soprovich because “the agenda item was for committee reports and we seemed to have fallen into individual councillors pontifi- cating.” Monday night’s angry exchange is not uncommon at West Vancouver council meetings. Soprovich and Durman have — themselves engaged in heated debates on several occasions in the past, but Soprovich admitted he holds no grudges. “T respect Victor very much. We've had a go around a few times, but afterwards we make up,” he said. It is simply part of having an open political process which coun- cil committed to three years ago, he said. Soprovich said he plans to run for re-election — in November, while Durman is holding back on his decision until Oct. 14.
