By DEAN CUMMER At its) regular Monday night meeting, West Van council debated what sort of flags should be permitted in the municipality, how many should be permitted, and what makes a sign patriotic. A request from the Petro Canada station at 2196 Marine Drive prompted the patriotic debate. The station wants ¢o renew its permit to allow a free standing sign on the premises. The West Vancouver Ad- visory Design Panel recom- mended council approve the station's request: subject to the removal of aff non- patriotic flags from the building, and to the station operator being advised to tefrain from displaying a strobe light on the property. The flags in question are six Petro Canada flags on the roof of the building which sport half a maple leaf P ADVERTISED IN B.C. and the company’s name in capital letters along the bor. tom. “The flags hive been on the roof for the past six years,”* says station manager Terry Higgins. “The Petro Canada flag is Canadian, mean, it's ours.”* Ald. Gerdon echoed Higgins sentiment, asking, ‘‘Isn’t the Petro Canada sign patriotic?"’ Ald. David Finlay stated the other oil companies were bound to disagree. Ald. Mayor Derrick only Hum- phreys went a step further to suggest limiting the aumber uf patrictic flags to one, but then said oue patriotic flag would be too limiting.
