IT’S an almost univer- sal fantasy: return to high school, do it all over again minus the zits and the hideous fashion sense, and mix with the most popular crowd in school. Come on, admit it. I don’t care if you're a doctor or a dockworker: you have a painful high school memory that makes you wince to this day, and you’d do anything to go back and get it right. 25-year-old Josie Geller (Drew Barrymore) gets her second chance when she goes undercover, in true 2] Jump Street style, to report on what makes today’s high school kids tick. Josie’s own high school existence was like a bad dream. We cajoy watching this part of the film in partic- ular, because even we didn’t have it that bad. But “Josie Grossic” has redeemed herself ... kind of. Sure, she’s never really been kissed but she works for the Chicago Sun-Times. Her sociai life may revolve around her turtles, but at least she has her own apartment. In short, Josie has never been able to shed her scarlet letter ... that’s a big “1.” for loser. Her foray into those sweaty halls is a huge failure. The coolest guy in school thinks she’s in special ed, the three most popular senior girls won't give her the time of day, and the only friends she makes are members of The Denominators, a calculus club with matching sweat- shirts and all, Not exactly the juicy exposé Josic’s editor had envisioned. Things change when Josie’s brother Rob (David Arquette) decides that if she can do it, so can he. He fakes some I.D. and enrols in the hopes of this time making his baseball dreams come truc. After Rob attains instant in- crowd status after he wins a coleslaw-cating contest, he spreads titilating rumours about Josie that eventually elevate her to prom-queen status. Throw in a taboo amount of attention from onc of Josie’s very cute teachers (Michael Vartan as Mr. Coulson, who apparently sees the real Josie, right through her Denominators sweat- shirt), and things are looking up. She might get kissed after all but without blowing her’ cover he’ll get arrested. Now there’s a story her editor can use! With a predictabls plot, by far the best thing about Never Been Kised is Drew Barrymore, whose earnest passion for her role is infec- STUDIO Yara an award winning, up to date stylist who we welcome to our team. a8. 1252 Lynn Valley Road RE Ses FAR you into fi though she’s genuinely hav- ing fun. Barrymore’s not afraid to make herself look down- right dowdy, in fact, she never really looks that great in this film. But she always looks as E takes you to the edge of intense natural realms imaginable. @ EXPERI ENCE™ Showstimos; Daily at 1:15pm, 3:45pm, 6:45pm and Spm, plus 5:45pm show on Saturdays and Sundays . f- MAK TO THE OXLNINS Come face te face with snarling prehistoric behemoths in thrilling 3-D!
