in their fight against
garbage and chemical
fertilizers last week: the
red wiggler worm.

In celebration of Earth
Week -(April 22 to 26), the
school has embarked on an
ambitious journey — to edu-
cate students about waste
reduction, wildlife habitat and
organic gardening practices.

To help accomplish this,
the North Shore Recycling
Program was invited to pre-
‘sent its Wormkeevers work-

Earthshakers Club.

“Worm composting is a
great way to teach kids about
the interaction — between
humans and the natural
world,” said Victoria Gazcley,
community programs coordi-
nator ar the NSRP. “There’s
something about worms that
really captures imaginations.”

In order to support and
enhance concepts introduced
by the school’s buttertly gar-
den in 1997, students at this
workshop learned how they

can reduce the amount of

garbage they produce by
incorporating — vermiculture
(worm composting) into their
classrooms.
