But his response raised tit- ters from the audience, as did the news that after a section had been raised into place, Normal traffic would be allowed to drive over it prior to the piece being welded down. “It's all done in perfect safety,” said Freer. “We have a couple of the best enginecring firms in the world working on this.” But the main focus of the evening was the impact the bridge closures would have on local residents and businesses. West Vancouver Mayor Pat Boname said the closures would affect what she called the “Greater North Shore” and would have a negative impact on communities along the coast and as far away as Nanaimo. Park Royal mall general manager Rick Amantea said the current bridge plan will cause immense traffic disrup- tion, creating what he described as “a grave impact businesses on the North Shore,” especially considering that the project as planned will provide no real tratfic-handling improvement, such as an extra Jane. North Vancouver City Mayor Jack Loucks provided the fone voice in favour of the engineering work. “If the (bridge) roadway gives way, then we aren’t goin, to have a bridge at all,” he sai “and that would be 10 times worse than what we are dis- cussing now.” n't top up the gas tonk.
